Biography

Jericho Brown worked as a speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before earning a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. His first collection of poetry, Please (New Issues Poetry & Prose, 2008), won the American Book Award. His second collection, The New Testament (Copper Canyon Press, 2014), received the Annisfield-Wolf Book Award and was named one of the bet books of the year by Library Journal, Coldfront, and the Academy of American Poets. Brown is the recipient of a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Bunting Fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, and a Whiting Writer’s Award. He has also received two travel fellowships to the Krakow Poetry Seminar in Poland. His poems appear in magazines including, Oxford American, Ploughshares, and A Public Space, and in anthologies such as, The 100 Best African American Poems edited by Nikki Giovanni. He is an associate professor in English and creative writing at Emory University in Atlanta.
