Biography

Sarah Manguso was born in Massachusetts in 1974, earned degrees from Harvard College and the University of Iowa, held the Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University, and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rome Prize. Her first collection of poems, The Captain Lands in Paradise (Alice James Books, 2002), was named a Best Book of the Year by The Village Voice. Her second collection, Siste Viator, was published in 2006 by Four Way Books. Her writing has been anthologized in The Best of McSweeney’s (Vol. 1) and three volumes of the Best American Poetry series. She is the author of five books of prose including 300 Arguments (Graywolf Press, 2017); Ongoingness (Graywolf, 2015), a meditation on motherhood and time; The Guardians (Farrar Straus and Giroux, 2012), an investigation of friendship and suicide; and The Two Kinds of Decay (Farrar Straus and Giroux, 2008), a memoir of her experience with a chronic autoimmune disease; as well as a collection of very short stories, Hard to Admit and Harder to Escape (McSweeney’s, 2007). She has taught at the Pratt Institute and in the Graduate Writing Program at New School University, and has read and lectured throughout the United States. . She now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she is currently the Distinguished Visiting Writer at St. Mary’s College.
