Biography

Sarah Messer is the author of a memoir, Red House: Being a Mostly Accurate Account of New England’s Oldest Continuously Lived-In House (Viking, 2004); a book of translations (with Kidder Smith), Having Once Paused: Poems of Zen Master Ikkyu (University of Michigan Press, 2015); and the poetry collections Bandit Letters (New Issues, 2001) and Dress Made of Mice (Black Lawrence Press, 2015). She has received fellowships and grants from organizations including the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has appeared in journals such as the Paris Review, the Kenyon Review, and Quarterly West, as well as several anthologies. In 2010, Messer co-founded One Pause Poetry an on-line audio archive and reading series in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a lecturer in the creative writing and literature program at The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan, and also teaches for the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown’s on-line writing program.
